Rawlinson.
Med razstavljalci v galeriji Gagosian in predstavljenimi avtorji v knjigi so tudi trije slovenski umetniki – Dejan Habicht (s knjigo umetnika One Gasoline Station), Tanja Lažetić (s knjigama Coloured People in Black and White (Yellow) in Nine Swimming Pools behind a Broken Glass) in Tadej Pogačar (s knjigo umetnika Various (Small) Pieces of Trash). Naštete knjige umetnika so izšle v letu 2010 v samozaložbi oz. v založništvu Zavoda P.A.R.A.S.I.T.E.
Nekaj izvodov teh izjemnih knjig umetnika je na voljo v KAPSULI – edini specializirani knjigarni publikacij in knjig umetnika v Sloveniji.

Bálint Szombathy’s exhibition Telephotography of the 1980s is dedicated to the lesser known, yet very important and interesting segments of his creation: his experimentation with the medium of photography. During the “return to painting” era of the 1980s, Bálint Szombathy devoted himself to communication technology. As the graphic editor and designer of the Novi Sad daily newspaper Magyar Szó, he was attracted to a “special” medium of printing, which had yet to be properly exploited in the art world. This was the “facsimile telegraph”, a machine which transmitted a newspaper image from a distant location to an editorial office with the help of telephonic impulses. These old “Mufax” machines, which used a rotating drum covered with brown paper, were replaced in the 1980s with a new generation of machines which reproduced photographs on a soft, white surface. Thus the technology saw both its rise and fall in the 1980s. Since the majority of photographs contained a number of errors and distortions, the device lost its primary informational function and at the same time gained an artistic one.

Consequently in the 1980s Bálint created an exceptional opus of appropriated telephotography. That work contains visual alterations, graphisme , micro structures, repetitive patterns often reminiscent of the techniques of collage, montage, etc., which were impossible to create using traditional means and machines. At the same time every telephotographic work was unique, its repetition impossible. In this way it was fundamentally different from a graphic work or a photograph, both based on methods of multiplication. Of course, we can’t deny a noted measure of irony in the fact that the machine which was designed for operating completely in an information system, exhibits a “sensible” dysfunction.

Bálint Szombathy is a representative of the “new artistic practice” and stands for one of the most significant figures of contemporary visual arts in the region. Since 1969 his art represents an example of a distinct nomadic and hybrid artistic practice. He creates drawings graphics, books, comics, photography, performances, interventions, visual poetry, conceptual art, etc. Szombathy in his actions and stagings most often connects avant-garde activism, neo-avant-garde and post-conceptual art. Through semiotic investigation he represents how the mechanisms of production, exchange and consumption reconstruct meanings and values.

Bálint Szombathy has participated in many major international exhibitions in Europe, Canada and the US, among others on prestigious exhibitions of contemporary arts (Body and the East, After the Wall, Hungarian Contemporary Art) at the Ludwig Museum of Budapest, the Museum of Modern Art Ljubljana, and Moderna Museet, Stockholm. He is the recipient of numerous awards for artistic creation including being a multiple prizewinner at the Book Fair in Novi Sad and Belgrade. He lives and works between Novi Sad and Budapest.

Ruscha der Fischotter aka: Printed Matter And Other Visible Things On Paper Not Necessarily Meant To Be Viewed As After Ruscha aka: One Hundred Views Of One Hundred Views Of Mount Fuji, If Someone Says So aka: SIX HANDS AND A CHEESE SANDWICH is a book about books, a catalogue and an art/bookwork in its own right.
Content: By now the appropriation and paraphrasing of Ed Ruscha constitutes a genre of its own. The first were 1968 Bruce Nauman with ‘Burning Small Fires’ and 1971 ‘Ed Ruscha’ (actually Joel Fisher) with ‘Six Hands and a Cheese Sandwich’, with further appropriations or hommages over the decades, and in the last years it almost became fashionable, the evidence is massive.

There is actually none of the books published by Ruscha in the 60ies, which has not been paraphrased yet, be it the Gas Stations (e.g. Jeff Brouws, Toby Mussmann, Eric Tabuchi, Michalis Pichler, Anonymus, Michael Maranda), the Fires (e.g. Bruce Nauman, Jonathan Monk, Yann Serandour, Thomas Galler), the Apartments (John O’Brian, Anne-Valerie Gasc, Eric Doehringer), the Parking Lots (Hermann Zschiegner, Travis Shaffer), the Swimming Pools (Jen Denike, Taro Hirano), the Real Estate Opportunities (Adam&Kate Davis, Eric Doehringer), the Royal Road Test (Tom Sachs, Simon Morris, Martha Hlady) or the Sunset Strip (J.F. Schnyder, Jonathan Monk, Derek Sullivan, Tom Sowden), even the Palm Trees (Tadej Pogocar, Eric van der Wejde), Colored People (Jonathan Monk, Tanja Lazetic) and Hard Light (Achim Riechers) have been taken up explicitly.

The assembly attempts to span a larger arc of tension, integrate Ruscha’s own books and put him into a evolution line in particular with the publications of Hiroshige and Hokusai, whose titles show great parallels in rhythm and use of numeric and vague enumerations.

The missing link could be Yoshikazu Suzuki’s GINZA HACCHO, buildings on Ginza, Tokyo, published as an accordion foldout book – in 1952, hence preceding Ruscha’s Sunset Strip for 13 years- in the same street-view-style which was for very long considered essentially Ruscha.

Project curator: Barbara Sterle Vurnik
Opening: Thursday, 6 December 2012 at 19h, P74 Center and Gallery

The artistic duo Beli sladoled, comprised of Miha Perne and Leon Zuodar, received the OHO Group Award in 2011, the annual award bestowed to young visual artists by P74 Center and Gallery. Known for their unconventional attitude towards painting and drawing that they manifest in forms ranging from large-scale wall paintings all the way to fanzines, this time the award-winning artists will present their newest project Don’t look back.

In their work Beli sladoled characteristically intertwine elements of comic strips, graffiti, and pop art with an emphasis on drawing, figuration, and strong colours. It is a mixture of the different aesthetics and narrations which penetrated into the very medium of 1980s classical painting when art was reunited with the everyday life of contemporary society, a combination that is still present today. Their work contains a consciously over-objective chaoticness as well as primitive elements of painting and deformed figures which recall the work of Otto Dix and George Grosz. Beli sladoled go beyond the aforementioned frame with their unconventional imagination. Despite the awareness of the social context, the artists remain on the level of commentary without venturing into the field of criticism, as they take a humorous and uncritical distance towards every theme (the art system, marginalised groups …). Their works are governed by paradox, mockery, self-irony, a dense and playful iconography of contemporary society, inspired and meaningful commentaries, as well as fluid and rather sophisticated drawing. A linear reading is crossed with chaotic threads of contemporary imagery.

Don’t look back is a multilayered project in which the artists deal with two questions: that of primitive human expression and that of the direct recording of one’s internal states. Thus the pair decided to create the entire project through drawings using only black ink. Drawing, which is already a constant in their work, makes this possible for them. As such they see in drawing a great artistic potential despite of, or exactly because of, the fact that it was, and still is – particularly in contemporary Slovenian art – perceived as outdated and in turn marginalised. With the exclusion of the past/primitive/obsolete in the context of the current they reach a paradoxical effect; in the same moment they also command us not to look back, and steer us and themselves only towards the present. This triggers questions of denial, acceptance, and repression. Their works, which, as they claim, are always thought of as a type of “Kinder Egg”, again bring the effect of surprise. Thus the exhibition itself has been conceived in a similar way.

Don’t look back is the result of a month-long drawing action which took place in each artist’s intimate environment. Following the principle of a daily journal, they committed themselves to drawing at a specified time each day on their own sheet of paper. Eliminating control and censorship and introducing automatism, chance, momentariness, stream of consciousness, and paradox remind us of the principles of the historical avant-garde of the 20th century. The element of a scroll, which the artists will unravel for the first time to themselves only at the installation and to the public at the opening of the exhibition, reminds us of ancient manuscript scrolls, which were a sort of predecessor to today’s comic strip, and thus the paradox comes full circle. Or were they only jokingly when saying during their work on the project: “back to the roots … don’t look back”.
